The conversation usually starts with, “So what do you do for fun?”

My reply was typically, “I love to ride my bike, golf, read, spend time with my family;
and I make furniture”.

I’d pull out my phone and show some photos of past projects. The response was usually,
“Wow, that’s beautiful. You should sell your work!”

So, I started selling stuff. I’ve chosen not to sell finished pieces through my website,
instead, I design and build custom furniture to fit clients’ space, style and needs.

The Design / Build Process

  • Design

    Most clients know what they want … kinda. We go through a design process to define the necessary elements to reduce or eliminate revisions causing wasted time and material. Sure, you want Walnut, but do you want only chocolate brown colored Walnut or some of the blonde and pink tones as well? Drawers: what do you intend to store in them which might require mechanical drawer slides.

  • Prototype

    I’ve experienced much better design outcomes when I make a full scale prototype to place in the client’s home, in the intended space, and then let the client “live with it” for a week. While most of the time it helps confirm the design, sometimes it drive revisions that only require some more corrugated cardboard, painter’s tape and holt melt glue.

  • Build

    Now the fun begins. I generate a detailed quote for the finished piece delivered. After taking a 50% deposit, I invite the client to accompany me to the wood store to help select the lumber. It’s rewarding to choose between several boards for prominent parts of the piece, like a table’s top. I then send updates, along with pictures, on the build progress. The final 50% payment is due upon delivery.
